My Sister the Commuter

My sister, Catherine doesn't have your normal daily commute.

Living in Plymouth, England, she works as a lawyer in the city centre and resides a few kilometres "as the crow flies" from the office.

The city of Plymouth is built between the mouths of two rivers (Tamar and Plym), forming a sort of "horseshoe" geographically, with some suburbs falling on opposite banks of the Plymouth Sound.

Plymouth: the geographical "Horseshoe"

This of course results in traffic congestion if one drives from the eastern suburbs to the city centre, often resulting in a commute of over an hour for 8 - 10 kilometres.

Solution?

Weather permitting, Catherine walks a mile to the yacht marina below her apartment, catches the ferry into town walking a further mile or two to the office.

Destination: Central Plymouth

When the weather is really good and she is feeling motivated, she'll often walk the 8 kilometre round trip back home - a great workout.

Commuting for fitness is something that has always interested me.

From my days of cycling to and from my first job, a "physical" commute was always something I looked forward to doing a couple of times a week.

It is also something I've rediscovered recently, but in a different form.

Having been involved in a cycling accident in July, the resulting injuries meant time-off the bike and away from running.

Seeing as I could not drive a car for a couple of weeks either, I started walking to and from work through the local forest.

What a great way to  start and end a work day.

This has evolved into a running commute lately upon my recovery - equally enjoyable, equally exhilirating and an equally great workout.

I intend on profiling some other interesting commuters I've come across over the years.

Interesting stories from even more interesting people.

Stay tuned.
